An Argentine film in the Japanese competition
La libertad doble, by Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso, is part of the Competition lineup at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival, according to the festival’s official program. Tokyo lists the film under its international title, Double Freedom, and identifies it as a coproduction from Chile, Argentina, Luxembourg, Germany and the United Kingdom.
The festival scheduled one screening for Monday, October 26, 2026 at 4:20 p.m. at Humantrust Cinema Yurakucho, another for Wednesday, October 28 at 9:15 p.m. at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya SCREEN12, and a third for Sunday, November 1 at 10:25 a.m., also at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya SCREEN12.
Why it matters for Argentine cinema
The Tokyo selection adds another international stop for a film already connected to the festival circuit. FIC.UBA’s official page identifies it as La libertad doble, directed by Alonso, and programmed it as its Opening Film in Buenos Aires.
For Argentine readers, the title also matters because it returns to a key area of Alonso’s own body of work. Film at Lincoln Center, in its New York Film Festival listing, describes Double Freedom as a return to and expansion of La Libertad, Alonso’s earlier film. That link frames the new film not only as a festival selection, but as a contemporary revisiting of a central gesture in his filmography.
