An Argentine filmmaker in the Cannes lab
Argentine screenwriter and director Agustina Sánchez Gavier was selected for the 52nd session of the Cannes Film Festival’s Résidence, Cinéma de Demain announced on October 5, 2026. The residency takes place in Paris from October 1, 2026, to February 15, 2027.
Sánchez Gavier is part of a group of six filmmakers chosen to work on new feature films. Her project is “Mártires”, described by Cannes as her first fiction feature, currently in the writing stage.
What La Résidence means
La Résidence is the Cannes Film Festival program that supports filmmakers as they write their first or second fiction feature, through two four-and-a-half-month sessions each year. It provides a working framework in Paris, but it does not by itself confirm a shoot date, release date or distribution deal.
Cinéma de Demain’s institutional page says that, since 2000, La Résidence has welcomed more than 300 filmmakers from over 60 countries. Among the Argentine names listed by the program is Lucrecia Martel, placing this selection within a longer line of Argentine auteur cinema with international circulation.
The trail left by “Nuestra Sombra”
Sánchez Gavier’s selection follows the path of “Nuestra Sombra”, a short film listed by Directors’ Fortnight 2024 as a 19-minute Germany-Argentina production. Cannes’ own information also connects that work to the development of “Mártires”.
The Audiovisual Arts Institute of Misiones reported in 2024 that “Nuestra Sombra” was shot in the province, in Oberá, Panambí, Alba Posse and Villa Bonita. That gives the news a federal dimension: the step into Cannes is not only rooted in a European circuit, but also in a production tied to Argentina’s northeast.
