A South American bid moves forward

Argentina, with the participation of Uruguay, Chile and Brazil, submitted technical information to World Rugby on October 5, 2026, as part of the regional bid to host the men’s Rugby World Cup 2035. According to the Argentine Rugby Union, the proposal is led by the UAR.

The key point is that this is a step in the selection process, not an awarded tournament. World Rugby has opened the host-selection pathway for the 2035 Rugby World Cup and says the formal appointment is scheduled for November 2027. Its process also allows multi-territory bids, the format used by the South American project.

Eight Argentine stadiums are on the proposed list

The list published by the UAR includes eight proposed Argentine stadiums: Monumental and José Amalfitani in Buenos Aires, Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona in La Plata, Mario Alberto Kempes in Córdoba, Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero, Padre Martearena in Salta, Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza and Gigante de Arroyito in Rosario.

Outside Argentina, the same list presents Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile, and Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. All of them should be read as proposed stadiums within the bid, not as confirmed tournament venues.

What still has to happen

World Rugby still has to assess the proposals and move through the stages of its process. The published timetable includes visits and evaluations between late 2026 and early 2027, identification of a preferred host in May 2027 and formal appointment in November 2027.

The Argentine Rugby Union had already said in March 2026 that it was working on a Rugby World Cup 2035 project with Sudamérica Rugby and the participation of Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. The October development is the documentary step within the international timetable.
